Overview
Helping professionals, such as counselors, social workers, and nurses have an ethical obligation to understand and identify barriers to a client’s health and well-being. Identifying these barriers can be obvious at the micro-level, but what about those macro or systemic barriers that need to be addressed? As helping professionals, we need to understand and be aware of inequalities or injustices that our clients face due to race on a daily basis. This presentation will address some of these inequalities or injustices on an environmental and organizational level. Participants will leave with a better understanding of these systemic barriers, the consequences on the client’s health and wellbeing, and what we can do to help.

By Attending Our Workshop, You Will Be Able To:

  • Define environmental injustice
  • List at least two examples of environmental racism
  • Recognize consequences to the individual due to environmental injustices
  • List at least two examples of organizational racism
  • Identify implicit biases concerning environmental and organizational racism
