Most people decide to enter the helping professions because of a deep desire to help others. To protect ourselves, our clients, and our organizations, we are expected to uphold key boundaries to ensure that the client and patient relationship is always professional. In this unique experiential training, Kim Wilson, LPC, will lead a discussion on the ethical imperative of setting and maintaining healthy boundaries and the communication best-practices that enables those healthy boundaries. To set the stage, acclaimed actress Judith Gantly will read the children’s classic, “The Giving Tree,” with an alternative ending where the tree sets healthy boundaries. From here, attendees will participate in a discussion and exercise, comparing and contrasting the alternative and original ending – applying our knowledge of boundaries, communication strategies, and the surrounding ethics. As we endeavor to strengthen our relationships with clients and align our practice with our professional codes of ethics, this training will illuminate the ethical imperative of setting and maintaining healthy boundaries.
