Overview
As we enter a new chapter in history, our communities are recovering from trauma, grief, and the ripples of a health system that was upended from a global pandemic. As many reflect on the many lessons learned, they are reassessing what “aging” and well-being means to them. It will be imperative that care providers and stakeholders come together to share evidence-based practices and innovative strategies to improve the health and wellbeing of our aging communities. In our 4th Annual Elder Care Symposium, we are focusing on improving care for people living with dementia and their care partners – bringing all stakeholders to the table. In our keynote presentation, we feature It’s Not a Burden: The Humor and Heartache of Raising Elderly Parents, a full-length documentary film that takes the audience on the emotional rollercoaster ride of being a caregiver to a loved one. It provides the helping professional insight to the challenges that caregivers face daily. It also highlights the universal issues around aging through the stories of a variety of families from diverse backgrounds, races, and genders.

Following the film, Lauren Snedeker, DSW, LSW, LMSW, will lead participants in a brief discussion and then continue with a presentation on Caregiver Mental Health and Ethics in Practice. This event also features Barak Gaster, MD, FCAP, as he shares about the Dementia Directive that he created and how this can be critical in the long-term for those that have cognitive impairment. Finally, we will close out our day with a reading of the play Steering into the Skid and a discussion. This full day of incredible experts will provide attendees with access to the latest practice guidelines and strategies to enhance their everyday practice.

By Attending Our Workshop, You Will Be Able To:

  • Recognize the emotional toll that caregivers endure on a daily basis and identify ways to help caregivers.
  • State the different components of the dementia directive and how it differs from a POA.
  • Identify some of the challenges faced by caregivers and solutions that can be implemented.
  • Name some ethical principles/dilemmas that can arise around caregiving, care partner mental health and advanced care planning and how the helping professional can assist in resolving these.
  • State two best practices and resources around Advance Care Planning with seniors and their care partners.
